Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation

I have never seen any of the other four Mission: Impossible movies, so I certainly can’t tell you how Rogue Nation compares. However, I can tell you that it is one of the best spy movies I have ever seen. Let me begin by saying I am not a huge fan of Tom Cruise as a person, but I will admit that he is a phenomenal actor. I loved him in ‘Tropic Thunder’. I never would have guessed he could pull off comedy that well. He was also pretty good in ‘Edge of Tomorrow’. If you haven’t seen that, check it out. It should be on demand, or Netflix soon. But I digress…

I wasn’t expecting the bits of humor throughout the film (again, haven’t seen the others). But I thought the moments were well placed and well executed. You never felt like it was a comedy though. Nope. This is an action packed thriller, through and through. And the knowledge that Cruise did most of those insane stunts himself made it more entertaining to watch in my opinion. Not because I was happy he was putting his life on the line for a friggin movie, but because you never lose sight of the actor’s face, and he’s going through it as his character would be. That man has some serious cajones. There’s a sneak peak of the film where Cruise explains the stunt and they show the behind-the-scenes pre-edited footage. Check it out if you can, it’s crazy to watch.

Simon Pegg is a genius. I adore him. He’s an amazing actor and a spectacular writer (here’s another plug, ‘Paul’ if you like aliens and love to laugh, watch it). Pegg is an extremely versatile actor and I feel he could play any role and just fit. He’s great at those, I don’t want to say plucky-comedic relief guys but it’s true! He delivers those quick hilarious phrases perfectly. Seriously, I adore him. I’m also a fan of Jeremy Renner although it was kind of difficult in some scenes to watch him. He didn’t seem to fit in. But he still rocks. I had never heard of Rebecca Ferguson so I wasn’t sure what I was in for when she first came on screen. In her first scene her “sly” moves seem to be a little sloppy. But I could just be nitpicking. The rest of her screen time is pretty stellar. Ferguson is gorgeous, so pair that with badass moves and a cunning mind and she’s the full package. Someone teach me those moves, and espionage, for free, or at least an IOU.

In many spy movies you can see what is coming next. But Rogue Nation had so many twists and turns I really never knew what was going to happen. There’s so much excitement, and the movie is so intense it will just keep you enthralled. Cinema Wise is giving Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation a 4.75 out of 5.
